Department of Peace

We face great challenges: the end of cheap energy, global depletion of natural resources, financial crises and global warming. Individually and as a nation, there are plenty of good reasons to be frightened.

Fear and insecurity can lead to violence. Between nations it can lead to war. Here in Maine it leads too often to domestic abuse, mistreatment of our children or - as substance abuse - to mistreatment of our selves. It can lead to gang behavior, bullying of the weak and attacks on others with different beliefs or practices.

Such violence need not be inevitable. By furthering our understanding of equity, justice and fairness - not only in the classroom but in our communities - a state Department of Peace can help us meet the challenges ahead with an enhanced understanding of our communities, of our human and economic rights and of our shared democratic values.

As Governor, I will create such a department, so that this state can meet the the future peacefully and cooperatively.
